Olympics and Civil Engineering

Posted by: Skylar In: news

The olympics fever is already catching, and I’ve already seen a few posts relating the olympics and civil engineers. The first post is a look at the interesting structures that were designed and constructed for Beijing 2008. While the post does not go into much detail about the design and functionality of the buildings, there are pretty pictures of the ‘Water Cube’ and the ‘Bird’s Nest’. My favourite quote has to be this:

Prior to the August 8 start date of the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, there was already evidence of outstanding performances; not from athletes (their turn will come), but instead from the army of engineers and architects responsible for the design and construction of the Olympic sports venues.

Take that, athletes.

In other news, the UK will be a lot poorer once it’s paid for the 2012 olympic buildings looking at the sky-rocketing prices of materials and civil engineering fees (!?!):

As the survey explains, civil engineering costs rose over 12 per cent in the year to second quarter of 2008, as did materials, and have been the main inflationary drivers.

UK civil engineers everywhere: rejoice!
